EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, is one of the most dynamic university campuses in Europe and ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide. The EPFL employs more than 6,000 people supporting the three main missions of the institutions: education, research and innovation. The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working environment at the heart of a community of more than 16,000 people, including over 12,000 students and 4,000 researchers from more than 120 different countries.

Your mission :

The Structural Xploration Lab (EPFL) opens a Postdoctoral Researcher position for a project on the prediction of building stock obsolescence for urban mining and circular construction.
The 3-year-long research is integrated within the UrbanTwin project, a large multi-disciplinary consortium of Swiss federal research institutes.

One major issue to initiate circular loops in the built environment is that conventional procurement processes and material availability through deconstruction follow independent rationales. In order to have offer and demand coincide in time, the new model will leverage the potential of digital twins, field-surveyed Building Information Models (BIM), and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with statistical inference and machine learning to predict the availability of reusable construction components over long-time windows.

Main duties and responsibilities include :

As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will be expected to lead and execute original theoretical and computational research. This involves collaborative work with other research partners in and outside the lab. You will communicate your findings through peer-reviewed manuscripts and presentations at conferences. We value mentorship and collaboration, and you will have the opportunity to assist with supervising Ph.D., Masters, and Bachelor students in Architecture and/or Civil Engineering.

Your profile :

Candidates should have recently been awarded, or are about to obtain, a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Architecture, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related discipline. You should possess substantial expertise in data inference research, complemented by a deep interest in construction processes and the built environment. You should be enthusiastic, driven, and eager to collaborate within a dynamic team environment where diverse group members combine their complementary expertise and skill sets to tackle complex problems is essential.
Professional command of English (both written and spoken) is mandatory.

We offer :

The successful Postdoc will join a vibrant, collaborative, and international research team renowned for its interdisciplinary expertise in structural design for circularity and reusability assessment. The Structural Xploration Lab is located at the Smart Living Lab, EPFL Fribourg. Opportunities for involvement in teaching classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels will be provided.
